What Is a Garage Door Spring Tune-Up?

A spring tune-up is a routine maintenance check focused on keeping your springs in peak operating condition. It typically includes:

• Visual inspection — checking for rust, corrosion, visible wear, or stress fractures along the spring coils
• Lubrication — applying a high-quality lubricant to reduce friction and prevent premature wear. We use white lithium grease or silicone spray, never WD-40 which evaporates too quickly
• Tension adjustment — fine-tuning spring tension so the door lifts evenly and balances correctly at the midpoint
• Balance test — disconnecting the opener and checking that the door stays in place at waist height (it should neither rise nor fall on its own)
• Hardware check — inspecting cables, pulleys, and drums for wear alongside the springs

Signs Your Springs Need a Tune-Up (Not Replacement)

A tune-up is usually sufficient when:

• The door opens unevenly or one side leads the other slightly

• The door closes too fast or slow but hasn’t failed
• Springs show light surface rust but no visible damage or gaps in the coils

Signs Your Springs Need Full Replacement

Replacement is needed when:

• A spring is visibly broken — you’ll see a gap in the coil, often accompanied by a loud bang when it happens
• The door won’t open at all or feels extremely heavy (the spring’s counterbalance effect is gone)
• Springs are heavily rusted with pitting or visible corrosion damage throughout the coil
• The door has stopped balancing — even after tension adjustments it won’t hold at the midpoint
• Springs are approaching end of rated life — standard springs last 10,000 cycles (roughly 7–10 years for a door used twice daily). If one has broken, the other is usually close behind

Should I Replace One Spring or Both?

When one spring breaks on a two-spring system, we strongly recommend replacing both at the same time. Springs on the same door are installed at the same time and experience the same wear rate — if one has failed, the other typically has a similar number of cycles remaining. Replacing both during the same visit costs significantly less in labor than two separate service calls, and eliminates the second breakdown (usually within weeks or months).

Can I Replace Garage Door Springs Myself?

We strongly advise against it. Torsion springs store enormous energy under tension — an improperly released spring can snap with enough force to cause serious injury or death.
