Garage Door Spring Repair
A broken spring is the number one reason a garage door won’t open. Arrowhead Door has replaced torsion and extension springs across the KC metro since 1986, usually the same day you call, with parts stocked on every truck.
How To Tell Your Spring Is Broken
A spring letting go sounds like something hit the garage. If you heard a bang and now the door won’t budge, it’s almost certainly the spring.
Door opens a few inches
The opener strains, lifts the door a few inches, then stops or reverses. The safety system is refusing to lift dead weight.
The visible gap
Look at the coil above your door. A clean break shows a 1 to 2 inch gap in the spring. Don’t touch it, just call.

Torsion vs. Extension Springs
Torsion springs mount on a steel bar above the door and do the heavy lifting on most modern doors. On a two-spring door we replace both when one breaks. The second spring has the same number of cycles on it and is close to its own failure. Replacing both keeps the tension balanced so the door lifts evenly, and you are not calling us again in six months.
Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on either side of older doors and stretch as the door closes. They are always replaced in pairs, and we install safety cables through each one so a future break cannot send the spring flying across the garage.
Every replacement is matched to the door’s weight and cycle rating. A spring that is slightly too light makes the opener work too hard. One that is too heavy throws the door upward and wears out the hardware. Our technician balance-tests the door, checks the opener force settings, and inspects the cables, rollers and hinges before leaving. A properly balanced door stays put when the tech lifts it halfway and lets go.
The One Garage Door Job You Should Never DIY
Garage door springs hold the entire weight of the door under constant tension. Winding them without the right bars and training is how hands and wrists get broken. Leave this one to a background-checked professional with the proper tools. It’s what we do all day, every day.

How to tell your spring is broken
Three signs account for nearly every spring call we take, from Independence to Overland Park. None of them require tools or a ladder.
The loud bang
A spring letting go sounds like something hit the garage. Homeowners tell us they thought a car backed into the door or a shelf fell over. If you heard a bang from the garage, especially overnight or on a cold morning, and now the door will not budge, it is almost certainly the spring.
The door opens a few inches and stops
The opener strains, lifts the door a few inches, then stops or reverses back down. That is not an opener fault. The safety system is refusing to lift dead weight the motor was never built to carry. If the opener hums, clicks, or does nothing at all with the door sitting closed, that points to the opener instead, and our garage door opener repair page covers those symptoms.
The visible gap
Look at the coil mounted on the bar above the door. A healthy torsion spring is one continuous coil. A clean break shows a 1 to 2 inch gap where the spring has separated, and sometimes the two halves hang at slightly different angles. Do not touch it, and do not pull the red release cord to try the door by hand. Just call.

Spring Repair Questions
How much does garage door spring replacement cost in Kansas City?
It depends on three things: the weight of your door, whether you need one spring or two, and the cycle rating you choose. A lightweight single door with one spring is a smaller job than an insulated double door with a pair of high-cycle torsion springs. We do not publish a one-size price because it would be wrong for half the doors in the metro. Instead, describe your door and what happened when you call (816) 373-8228, and we quote the real price upfront on the phone before any work begins. There are no hidden fees and no after-hours surcharge.
Can I still open my door with a broken spring?
Do not try. The opener is not built to lift the full weight of the door, and forcing it can burn out the motor or bend the top panel, which turns a spring job into a spring, opener and panel job. Lifting the door by hand is also risky because a door with no spring tension can drop without warning. If you must get a car out before we arrive, call us first and we will walk you through the safest way to do it for your door.
How long do garage door springs last?
Springs are rated in open-close cycles, and standard springs are usually rated for about 10,000 cycles. A busy family garage that opens and closes the door several times a day can use that up in 7 to 10 years. A door that is used once a day will last much longer. If you would rather replace springs less often, ask about higher-cycle springs. They cost more up front but can last two to four times as long before they fail.
Should I replace both springs if only one broke?
Yes, on a two-spring torsion door we recommend replacing both. The springs were installed together and have the same number of cycles on them, so the one that did not break is close to its own failure. Replacing both keeps the tension balanced so the door lifts evenly and the opener is not straining on one side. It also saves you a second service call a few months later. Extension springs are always replaced in pairs for the same reason, and we add safety cables at the same time.
Do you charge extra for same-day or after-hours spring repair?
No. Same-day service is our standard, not a premium option, and our 24/7 emergency service carries no after-hours surcharge. A spring that breaks at 9 PM on a Saturday costs the same to replace as one that breaks on a Tuesday afternoon. You get the price upfront on the phone either way.
