Is a Broken Garage Door an Emergency?
Short answer: it is when the door leaves your home unsecured, puts someone at risk of getting hurt, or traps a car you need. A door that’s stuck open, hanging off its tracks, or sitting partway open with a broken spring or snapped cable needs help right away. A noisy door, a slow opener or a remote that stopped working is a problem too, but it can usually wait for a regular appointment.
Here’s how to tell which situation you’re in, what to do safely while you wait, and when to call our 24/7 line. We’ve handled emergency garage door calls around Independence and the Kansas City metro since 1986.
When a Broken Garage Door Is an Emergency
Call for emergency service if any of these apply:
- The door is stuck open and won’t close. An open garage is an easy way into your home, especially overnight.
- The door is off its tracks or hanging crooked. A door that has come out of the track can fall without warning.
- A spring or cable broke while the door was partly open. The door is now held up by the opener or nothing at all, and it can drop.
- The door slammed shut or came down hard. That usually means a broken spring or cable, and the door may not be safe to run again.
- The door won’t reverse when something is under it. If the safety sensors or auto-reverse aren’t working, the door is a real hazard to kids, pets and cars.
- A vehicle hit the door. Bent panels and tracks can leave the door unstable.
- Your car is trapped and you need it. A trip to work, school or a medical appointment can’t always wait until tomorrow.
When It Can Wait for a Regular Appointment
These problems are worth fixing soon, but they don’t usually need an after-hours visit:
- The door is noisy, squeaky or grinding but still opens and closes normally
- The opener is slow, or the door moves a little unevenly
- The remote or keypad stopped working, but the wall button still works
- A small dent in a panel that doesn’t affect how the door moves
- Worn weatherstripping that lets in drafts or leaves
- A spring broke while the door was closed, and you don’t need the car right away
If something changes, such as the door starting to sag, jerk or make a new banging sound, treat it as more urgent and call.
Is It an Emergency? A Quick Guide
| Situation | Emergency? | What to do now |
| Door stuck open | Yes | Lock the door from the garage into the house and call |
| Door off track or hanging crooked | Yes | Stop using the opener, keep everyone clear, call |
| Broken spring, door partly open | Yes | Don’t try to lower it by hand, keep clear, call |
| Snapped or dangling cable | Yes | Unplug the opener and call |
| Door won’t reverse | Yes | Stop using the opener until it’s checked |
| Broken spring, door closed, car not needed | Can wait | Leave it closed, unplug the opener, book a visit |
| Remote or keypad not working | Can wait | Use the wall button, check the batteries |
| Noisy but working door | Can wait | Schedule a tune-up |
What to Do While You Wait for a Technician
- Don’t force the door. Pulling, pushing or running the opener over and over can bend the tracks or pull the door further out of line.
- Unplug the opener if a spring or cable is broken, so nobody presses the button by accident.
- Keep people, pets and cars away from under and around the door.
- Don’t touch the springs, cables or brackets. They hold enough tension to cause serious injury.
- If the door is stuck open, lock the door between the garage and the house and move anything valuable out of sight.
- If a spring is broken and the door is closed, leave it closed. A door with a broken spring is far heavier than it looks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a broken garage door spring an emergency?
It depends on where the door is. If the spring broke with the door partly open, yes: the door can drop and should be handled right away. If the door is closed and you don’t need your car, it can usually wait for a regular appointment. Leave the door closed and unplug the opener until then.
Is it safe to leave my garage door open overnight if it won’t close?
It’s not ideal, because an open garage gives easy access to your home. Lock the door between the garage and the house, move valuables out of sight, and call our 24/7 line so a technician can get it closed.
Can I close a garage door with a broken spring by hand?
We don’t recommend it. Without the spring, the door’s full weight is on whoever is lifting or lowering it, and it can come down hard. Keep clear and let a technician secure it.
Do you charge extra for emergency or after-hours calls?
No. Our emergency line is answered 24/7, and we don’t add an after-hours surcharge.
What if my car is stuck in the garage?
Don’t try to force the door or drive out under a door that’s partly open. Call us, and if you need the car right away, tell us when you call so we can prioritize the visit.
